Authorities Make Final Preparations Ahead of Official e-Port Handover

Automation Marks Major Step towards ‘Smart Bangladesh’

In preparation for the official handover of the new e-Port management system at Bhomra Land Port on July 4, 2024, the Bangladesh Land Port Authority (BLPA) has conducted on-site inspections and reviews to ensure a smooth transition from the current, paper-based procedures.

During a visit on May 23, 2024, BLPA Director of Traffic, Dr. Md. Harunur Rashid, received a detailed briefing on progress from the IT contractors who are currently running the system, focusing on the first five of eight modules that are now live. On June 7-8, 2024, a follow-up visit comprising a five-member committee tasked with overseeing the transition verified IT functionality, spoke to key stakeholders, and evaluated long-term sustainability efforts.

The committee, led by Mr Rashid and comprising representatives from BLPA and the Bangladesh Computer Council, has a vital role in overseeing the introduction of the new system, designed to streamline operations at this important border crossing with India, ahead of anticipated replication to the country’s other 22 land ports. The committee also has the support of the Alliance project team, as well as IT providers, Datasoft and Spectrum.

Mr Rashid emphasised the importance of the project, and a future national rollout, to furthering an ambitious government vision of creating a ‘Smart Bangladesh’.

“The automation of Bhomra Land Port is not just a technological upgrade, it is a strategic move to enhance our economic infrastructure and streamline trade processes,” he said. “This initiative will place Bangladesh at the forefront of modern, efficient trade practices.”
