Geneva, Switzerland – The European Union (EU) has joined the Alliance as its newest donor, while Germany has reinforced its support as a longstanding partner—highlighting a shared commitment to inclusive and sustainable economic growth through trade. This new engagement will support efforts to simplify and modernise cross-border trade processes, making them more efficient, transparent, and accessible—particularly in least developed countries.

The Alliance brings together governments and businesses to implement targeted trade facilitation reforms that address real-world needs. By working with the Alliance, the EU will help strengthen supply chain resilience, unlock new opportunities for micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises, and advance sustainable development while implementing the World Trade Organization’s Trade Facilitation Agreement.

The EU’s engagement with the Alliance aligns with its Global Gateway strategy, which seeks to build competitive and secure supply chains that deliver social and environmental benefits, extending beyond economic growth. The Alliance’s public-private partnership model also complements the EU’s objective to work hand in hand with European businesses to design and implement practical, business-led solutions to trade challenges.

“This partnership reflects the European Union’s commitment to harnessing trade as a force for good,” said Aguiar Machado, EU Ambassador to the WTO. “By working with the Alliance, we are helping to create trade environments
that are not only more efficient but also fairer and more sustainable. Supporting these reforms enables businesses—especially in developing countries—to participate more fully in the global economy.”

Philippe Isler, Director, the Alliance, welcomed the EU’s support, “We are delighted to have the European Union join us as a donor. Their leadership in promoting responsible trade and economic inclusion aligns perfectly with our mission. Together, we can deliver reforms that make international trade simpler, faster, and more inclusive—helping businesses grow while advancing sustainable development.”

“Germany has long supported the Global Alliance for Trade Facilitation because we believe in the power of public-private cooperation to make trade more inclusive and sustainable. We welcome the EU’s decision to join the Alliance and look forward to working together to create fairer trade systems that benefit businesses and communities worldwide,” said Carmen Heidecke, German Ambassador to the WTO.

The EU’s support will enhance the Alliance’s ability to deliver impactful trade facilitation projects worldwide. By focusing on inclusive and sustainable trade facilitation, the partnership will help ensure that trade works better for everyone.
